The Early Education Center offers year round, full day childcare for ages 3 months through 5 years. The Highlands Recreation District’s Early Education Center (EEC) is community-based and is committed to creating a positive, safe environment where your child’s learning will thrive and be nurtured and loved. We find new and innovative ways to teach curriculum, foster development and ignite your child’s imagination. Our program cultivates the growth of your child’s self-esteem, socialization, early education and the continuous developmental experience. The skills, understanding and knowledge our teachers bring to the classroom instill a warm, loving and inviting atmosphere for your child.
We believe that children learn best through play; that is why our program is developed around theme-based curriculum, lesson plans and activities that teach fundamental concepts. For example, each week will follow a letter of the alphabet and will be used as a springboard for science, art, movement, math and language activities. This encourages children to express themselves in areas of social, intellectual, emotional and physical growth. The Early Education Center focuses on hands-on learning activities, inside and outside the classroom, that provide each child with the opportunity to learn at his/ her level through their own tactile experience.
During 2017, EEC will be closed on the following dates:
July 4, 2017 – Independence Day
August 14, 2017 – Teacher in-service day

The After School Program is a licensed childcare program open to Highlands Elementary School Students, ages 5-12 and grades K-5. During the school year we also offer a winter and spring camp, and are open on most Staff Development Days. Our schedule also complements the School’s minimum day schedule throughout the year. Our program provides a safe and happy environment for children to enhance their physical and social development. We strive to leverage ‘teachable moments’ to practice the lifeskills necessary for children to be confident and comfortable citizens of our community. There’s quiet time for homework, creative projects and rousing games every afternoon, as well as an afternoon snack and a chance to participate in a wide array of enrichment classes and programs offered through the Rec.
Students are greeted at Highlands Elementary School by HRD staff. Students eat lunch at the School lunch court under the supervision of HRD staff and are then escorted on foot to the Rec Center. On very rainy days, transportation is provided. All Highlands Elementary School minimum days and teacher professional development days are included. Last day of ASP care for the 2017-2018 school year will be June 20, 2018. See Seasonal Camps below for care options during school holiday breaks.
The Rec offers full-day enrichment camps for students in grades K-8 during winter, spring and summer breaks, based on SMFC school district’s traditional calendar. Activities include a special on-site activity, a field trip, daily art projects, organized games and lots of time to swim and play. The Daily Schedule ensures that kids are active and engaged all day long! Campers may also register for additional onsite classes available at the Rec during camp hours. The Highlands Rec Seasonal Camp Emergency Packet MUST be completed for each camper before the first day of camp.
The Rec also offers a variety of on and offsite camps during school breaks. In these camps, kids in grades K-8 can enjoy a week or more, focusing on one activity, such as: horseback riding, rock climbing, cooking, science, and more. These camps are not associated with or run by Highlands Rec. Please call the Rec at (650) 341-4251 or Register Online for all our camp offering this season.
